Lighting + Set/Costume:
While the production's greatest strength lies in its script and performances, the design elements felt fairly simple. Fortunately, KXT on Broadway's Bakehouse Theatre is a venue that supports minimalist storytelling well, so this never became a major issue. That said, it would be fascinating to see a future iteration with a more developed visual world and stronger design choices to further elevate the play's absurdist energy.
Acting:
This is an extremely strong trio, perfectly equipped to bring the script's humour to life. Jenny Guigayoma delivers excellent physical comedy in the lead role, while Jake Walker and Jade Fuda showcase impressive versatility as they jump between multiple characters. Walker's turn as the family cat is a particular highlight. At times, some moments leaned towards stageiness where greater nuance could have been explored, but overall this is a highly entertaining and committed ensemble.
Writing:
A terrific debut work from Taylor Fernandez. The writing is sharp, contemporary, and packed with references that will resonate with Gen Z audiences. The comedy lands consistently thanks to strong timing and a willingness to embrace absurdity. Occasionally, the rapid pacing and heightened world make the narrative difficult to follow, and the ending resolves a little too quickly. Nevertheless, it's a hugely promising first play from an exciting local writer.
Directing:
With a strong script as its foundation, Beatrice Blackwell has crafted an enjoyable and energetic production. While there is room to further develop the detail within performances and explore more ambitious design choices, the direction successfully captures the play's humour and keeps the story moving at a brisk pace.
Overall:
A bold, funny, and thoroughly entertaining new work from a group of emerging Sydney creatives. Catch it to support the next generation of local theatre-makers.
