Three Words: Camp. Entertaining. Stylised
Watch if you feel like: Laughing and singing along.
Best Line of Dialogue: “Why am I a Fuccboi? Is it my Dad???”
How the audience reacted: The audience was in stitches, with plenty of roaring laughter, clapping and singalongs. It was clear the show was getting exactly the reactions it was going for.
Lighting: Highly sensory, with the lighting design and AV screen giving the show the feel of a live concert. Having the song lyrics displayed on screen was a great touch, encouraging the audience to sing along.
Set/Costume: The women playing men were particularly convincing, and the Kylie Minogue costume was a highlight (spoiler!). The set was relatively sparse, but the cast made clever use of what they had and it worked for their primary setting of their stadium tour.
Acting: An incredibly talented ensemble featuring Bridie Connell (creator, writer and performer), Vidya Makan, Megan Walshe, Clara Harrison and Blazey Best. These performers are practically stage athletes, effortlessly switching between acting, singing and dancing, all while delivering impeccable comedic timing. Vidya was a particular standout, especially during her limerick song.
Writing: From the outset, FUCCBOIS knows exactly what it wants to be: camp, outrageous and entertaining. And for the most part, it delivers. The show takes aim at male privilege, particularly within the music industry, using humour and satire to expose the absurdity of it all. However, as it went on, I found myself wanting a little more beneath the surface. Some of the jokes began to feel overused, losing their impact through repetition, and there was very little character development. While I appreciate that this is satire, I would have loved to see the show build towards a stronger message or moment of genuine pathos. At times, it feels like style takes precedence over substance. That said, if you're after an easy night of laughs and entertainment, there's plenty here to enjoy.
Directing: Richard Carroll does a fantastic job of bringing all the elements together. The comedic timing is sharp, the design elements complement the performances beautifully, and everything feels tightly choreographed and well-paced. It's a slick production that knows how to keep an audience entertained.
Overall: While the writing could benefit from a little more direction in what it ultimately wants to say, FUCCBOIS is undeniably entertaining. It's a crowd-pleaser packed with laughs, catchy songs and an exceptionally talented cast who make every moment worth watching. Sometimes you just want a night of good fun, and this delivers.
